GOCE May copy edit drive
Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors
[[ File:Writing Magnifying.PNG|100px|right]] The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their May 2012 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on May 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on May 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goal for the drive will be to eliminate January, February, and March 2011 from the queue. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa, and Stfg. >>> Sign up now <<<

Placement of {Authority control}
At Chrestomanci you have relocated {{authority control}} for author in {{Diana Wynne Jones}}. Does that follow some guideline for its use in articles about an author's works rather than use in biographies?
You list "Adding categories to the category Uncategorised people, including birth and death dates as I find them." When you do find a date in one of the authority databases (here, for example), do you provide a numbered footnote Reference for the latter? If so, please direct me to an example.
It may be more useful to reply at Wikipedia talk:Authority control#Citation. There I have now clarified and extended a March inquiry. Thank you for your time. --P64 (talk) 15:23, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- You are a librarian and a member of WP Science Fiction. Do you know of any library resources that systematically or occasionally identify cover artists for books? Evidently, our Library of Congress catalogue does not. For that I have used only the Internet Speculative Fiction Database (ISFDB) --and some WP biographies or official websites of illustrators.
- For a while I have added author pages at ISFDB to the External links of articles on books. Only recently I have sometimes added {{authority control}}. Before you relocated the latter, those were the two links, along with the template {{Diana Wynne Jones}}, at Chrestomanci (book series) which is {underconstruction}.
- P.S. Are you at or near Boston Public Library or the Smithsonian Library (continuing to skim your talk page)? I am near the former. --P64 (talk) 18:17, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- Placement in author templates
- You may be interested in Template talk: Authority control#Placement in author templates where i have cited you.
- I have renamed this section "Placement of {Authority control}" because that covers both contributions and I must learn not to begin headings with the open brace. (and wonder which other char's i should not use) --P64 (talk) 20:38, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us! Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles. Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! Jennifer Donnelly
Hi, Thanks for catching Jennifer Donnelly's bad LCCN code. Do you catch such errors by eye or by machine?
What is the rationale for deleting whitespace after a section heading (== ==) or a bullet point (*)? Whitespace assists the reader. Is there any difference in "layout"? I believe I have read recently --since meeting you this summer-- both that one of our robots adds whitespace around section headings and that whitespace following a bullet point should not be deleted. --P64 (talk) 16:21, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, again.
- 1. Now regarding that LCCN code I wonder what is your criterion for format and whether it is sometimes important. I have always inserted slashes before and after the first two digits. Checking Jennifer Donnelly (two versions) and Jan Mark (two versions, where you have marked four digits by slashes --perhaps years 2003 and 2001?-- I find that {{Authority control}} formulates the correct, identical link equally well from both formats.
- 2. Regarding my non-citation of recent reading (now bold above):
- See the remark by Stepho just below the horizontal line, Template talk:Anchor#Anchor precedes section heading
- Today I have continued the other, which my yield more clarity, Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Lists#Space after bullet point?
- 3. In reply User talk:P64#Donnelly, etc. you mentioned storage cost. Every edit stores another copy of the entire page, plus some metadata for the edit history.
- I sympathize regarding storage cost, so I now save infrequently with long edit summaries. At the extreme opposite end of the spectrum, some editors fill a short page of edit history (20) with less than I would try to do at once.
- Exhibit about 750 saves by one editor in eight months: (history 751 to 1000, the fourth page of 250)
- 4. P.S. Yesterday I completed my second pass through all the illustrator biographies in the new category Kate Greenaway Medal winners. While covering the Medal and highly commended runners up, I have systematically added some other features to all (as you probably know).
- Regarding whether to use section "See also" or section "External links" when we have none except {{Portal bar}} and {{Authority control}}, I asked about the former Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Layout#See also shortcuts alone and inferred that we should use the "External links" heading in the same way, with some support at Template talk: Authority control for interpreting that template as external links navbar.
This article DR
Just to let you know about this DR request--which I feel is a little unjustified given Rod Roddenberry's high profile in the Trek world. Feel free to give a comment--or not--if you wish. Thank You, --Artene50 (talk) 09:25, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Persondata
Despite reading WP:Persondata I am still not clear on the sort of descriptions wanted or required.
I note you added persondata to both Pete Gage (guitarist) and Pete Gage (vocalist) to say "British Musician". Having spent some time trying to differentiate between the two, as many sources confuse them, I think the generic "musician" is confusing, so have amended this to "British guitarist" and "British vocalist", albeit that they both have other talents. If this is incorrect, please revert, and tell me why/what the deciding factors are, in a case where two people have the same name, and are regularly confused Arjayay (talk) 18:35, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.
The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. You recently reviewed and rated the above article as a stub. It has 4000 characters, eight reliable sources, full inline citations, and a complete info box. We all make mistakes, but just in case it was not inadvertent, you should know that such an article does not qualify as a stub. BTW, I enjoyed reading your user page. Loved the 70s music references. I also used to work at a university historical library many, many years ago. Preparing finding aids for new manuscript collections was my first job out of college. Use of IMDB as a source
Hi FeanorStar7 - note that I have reverted your edit to Jan Schweiterman as you used IMDB as a source for the data. Per long standing consensus at various venues including WP:RSN, IMDB does not meet the reliable sourcing criteria for personal information in biography articles. McIlhenny
Hi. I notice that when you added a category sort key to Paul McIlhenny, you rendered the surname as "Mcilhenny". That did used to be the correct way to handle Mc names in sort keys, but the technical limitation behind that has been dealt with, and the current rule (see WP:MCSTJR) is to render the name with its correct capitalization. — Paul A (talk) 02:32, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

With regards to the change of name in this edit from
"Œvre de Belle-Belle (Chalmers 1816, p. 151)" to "Œuvre de Belle-Belle (Chalmers 1816, p. 151), how do you know is is a spelling mistake and not an archaic spelling as it is spelt that way in the cite source? Andy Borsa
Hey, I've changed the Category:Possibly living people, which you added to Andy Borsa, to Category:Living people. So far as I can tell "possibly living" is supposed to only include people confirmed to be over the age of 90 who aren't documented to have been alive in the last decade; I can't find a source for Borsa's date of birth so (in the absence of evidence of death) "living" seems to be the right category? The guidelines for these aren't exactly clear though so it's entirely possible I've missed something. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 03:09, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Aaron ben Samuel ha-Nasi, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Isaac Halevi (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

An exciting month of wiki events!
Hello there,
I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.
First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.
On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.
The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.
There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!
All the best,
James Hare

Hi, thank you for your work on WikiProject Biography assessments and updates. I just wanted to let you know that some of your updates are changing the template from {{WikiProject Biography}} to {{WPBiography}}. While the latter redirects to the current name (the former), it also stymies semi-automated talk page cleanups, which expect the projects to be named under the current convention ("WikiProject {whatever}"). Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon
The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.
If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.
When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

Khwaja Muhammad Latif Ansari
Hello, I'vs noticed that you've edited the page Khwaja Muhammad Latif Ansari. I greatly appreciate your efforts. As a matter of fact, I've been trying to get non-original sources for this man, and it has been exceedingly difficult. Can you inform me how you reached these results? I would greatly appreciate your feedback on how to find further info on this man. And what exactly are these library records? Can I cite them as sources? How do these records obtain their information?
Thanks,

Wikimedia DC celebrates Black History Month, and more!
Hello again!
Not even a week ago I sent out a message talking about upcoming events in DC. Guess what? There are more events coming up in February.
First, as a reminder, there is a WikiSalon on February 11 (RSVP here or just show up) and Wiki Loves Small Museums at the Small Museum Association Conference on February 15 (more information here).
Now, I am very pleased to announce:
- Tuesday, February 17 from 10 AM to 3 PM there will be #WikiTurgy at the University of Maryland. Join fellow theatre enthusiasts for a “mass act of public dramaturgy!”
- Thursday, February 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM we are hosting the Howard University Black History Edit-a-Thon. We are working in partnership with the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of African-American and African diasporic history.
- Tuesday, February 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM we have the Black History Month “First Edit” at NPR. Help improve Wikipedia and help others make their first edit to Wikipedia!
- Finally, our monthly dinner meetup is on Saturday, February 28.
There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!
If you have any questions or need any special accommodations, please let me know.

'Winterreise' - Date of Christof Berner's fortepiano.
Dear FeanorStar7,
First of all, many thanks for using the 'thank you' button a few minutes ago; that's very thoughtful of you.
Secondly, I also noticed your latest edit, which swapped the last two digits of the subject date from the previous '1872' to '1827'. Unfortunately, the ref tag pointing to the cited article in The Times is 'semi-rotten' in that we now require a login to access the reference citation. However, looking at the 'Product Description' details on the CD (at Amazon.co.uk), the 'Review' of the CD does mention the date of the fortepiano as '1872'. (See: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Schubert-Winterreise-Werner-Christoph-Berner/dp/B003064CZK/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423352463&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=Wintereise+Werner+G%C3%BCra+with+Christoph+Berner)
Of course, it is quite possible that this is also an error! But perhaps you have a better source? In that case, please may I suggest that you consider replacing the current 'semi-rotten' ref tag and point it at your source, for '1827'?
Thank you once again for your efforts in support of our encyclopaedia.
With kind regards;

Multiple VIAF LCCN Authority control for one article
Hi. I noticed your June revision [2] of Kenneth and Mamie Clark#External links when today's fix by Pigsonthewing [3] showed up on my watchlist. The present design of template {{Authority control}}, or design of our relations with Wikidata, or something, cannot handle two AC templates for one page in Article space.
This spring for many articles about multiple people --including all of those with incoming Redirects to joint biographies, who are also identified at VIAF, such as the Clarks-- i provided the biography with bullet-point External links to LC Authorities (and sometimes WorldCat); provided the redirects with template AC. See my April revision [4] and parallel work at Kenneth Bancroft Clark and Mamie Phipps Clark.
The one AC template for one article should fit the article, so a joint or group biography should carry the template only if VIAF recognizes a corporate entity. Example: Brothers Hildebrandt#External links.
If you find articles about multiple people, at least one with individual VIAF (and LCCN, i expect in most cases), whose footers should link LC and perhaps WorldCat, I will be happy to help. (In particular, I will create the redirects from scratch if they don't exist, and I believe that all such people should have redirect pages, so I hope you will notify me even if you are completing the existing pages yourself.)
P.S. I try to do redirects from people with VIAF/LCCN even if the target pages are not about them; eg Harve Zemach, Lucantonio Giunta.
P.P.S. Only one page may carry the AC template for any one VIAF/LCCN identity, and some people have two or more redirects. So you may not know whether Kenneth Clark has been done, and only once, without checking Kenneth Bancroft Clark, Kenneth B. Clark, etc. --P64 (talk) 21:37, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

Nefertiti's possible tomb in KV62
If you are interested, here is an article by Nicholas Reeves claiming that Nefertiti was original buried in Tutankhamun's KV62 tomb and might explain all the coverage of Nefertiti today and the fact that Egyptologists found a hidden new area behind a wall of Tutankhamun's small tomb. Reeves also wrote a British Museum Journal article arguing that Tutankhamun's tomb continued beyond its North wall and Japanese researchers using ground penetrating radar confirmed this today as several websites including this one states. Defaultsort
Hey, I noticed the small edit you made on the defaultsort parameter at Béla Grünwald [5]. I think this is wrong, because WP:MCSTJR says that accented letters and ligatures should be replaced by their unaccented or separated counterparts
, and it actually gives a Hungarian name as an example (György Budaházy → Budahazy, Gyorgy). I wanted to check in with you before reverting, though, in case I missed anything. —Nizolan (talk) 14:45, 9 April 2016 (UTC)
Sorting
Thanks for your response on William de Braose. The whole issue of sorting on medieval and names from various cultures is confusing in the extreme. If the guidelines are followed all the lists look completely mixed up. There is no good answer. It's best to sort names in the way they appear in indexes of reference works on their subject. I keep an eye on the family that I have a particular interest in and knowledge of. I'll leave the other ones you changed for editors who have more knowledge of the particular person and have made major contributions to their entries. Doug (at Wiki) 11:28, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

We set out to remove April, May, and June 2015 from our backlog (our 149 oldest articles), and by 23 July, we were done with those months. Overall, we recorded copy edits to 240 articles by 20 editors, reducing our total backlog to 13 months and 1,656 articles, the second-lowest month-end total ever. August Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 21 through 27 August; the theme was sports-related articles in honor of the 2016 Summer Olympics. [[ File:Copyeditors progress.png|right|thumb]] Hello everyone, and welcome to the December 2016 GOCE newsletter. We had an October newsletter all set to go, but it looks like we never pushed the button to deliver it, so this one contains a few months of updates. We have been busy and successful! Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: Nominations are open for election of Coordinators for the first half of 2017. Please visit the election page to nominate yourself or another editor, and then return after December 15 to vote. Thanks for participating! September Drive: The September drive was fruitful. We set out to remove July through October 2015 from our backlog (an ambitious 269 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of oldest articles to just 83. We reduced our overall backlog by 97 articles, even with new copyedit tags being added to articles every day. We also handled 75% of the remaining Requests from August 2016. Overall, 19 editors recorded copy edits to 233 articles (over 378,000 words). October Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 October; the theme was Requests, since the backlog was getting a bit long. Of the 16 editors who signed up, 10 editors completed 29 requests. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part. November Drive: The November drive was a record-breaker! We set out to remove September through December 2015 from our backlog (239 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of old articles to just 66, eliminating the two oldest months! We reduced our overall backlog by 523 articles, to a new record low of 1,414 articles, even with new tags being added to articles every day, which means we removed copy-editing tags from over 800 articles. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from October 2016. Officially, 14 editors recorded copy edits to 200 articles (over 312,000 words), but over 600 articles, usually quick fixes and short articles, were not recorded on the drive page. Housekeeping note: we do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your Watchlist.
